Science Classification Lesson 3: Classification Keys

Here is an example of a classification key:

Classification keys are a means of identifying unknown organisms based on their distinct features. Keys involve a series of questions about an organism’s physical characteristics, with the answers branching off to other until the organism is identified.

When making a key, it is important that the questions must have yes or no answers.

Notice how you start at the top and work down to the bottom.

Main Activity

I would like you to design classifications for these objects

  1. Fruit

Remember that you need to ask questions that will split the group into 2 roughly equal groups each time.

Some suggestions for question areas:

  • Do you eat the outside of the fruit?
  • Is it round?
  • Does it have pips?
  • Is it smooth?
  • Can you think of any other questions?

2. Musical Instruments

Please share your classification keys on ClassDojo.

You could also try to design a classification key for something else of your own idea:

  • Liquorice Allsorts
  • Celebrations
  • Cartoon characters
  • Books

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
