Daily News

Good morning everyone and welcome to the new week of home learning.

I thought I would share this video with you from last week. Taylor did all the editing for this herself – full marks to her for doing such a professional job and for involving her whole family in the making of the video:

Please do keep on submitting your work – remember that the whole school expectation is that work from at least two subjects should be submitted every day.

Mr Simmons’ Joke of the Day

Maths

One of the major things we focus on in maths during Year 6 is fractions – you are now an expert at adding, subtracting, ordering, mulitplying, dividing these as well as finding fractions of an amount.

Over the last couple of weeks we investigated decimals and saw the link between those and fractions. In this unit of work we will be seeing the final link in this family – percentages. In fact, in maths, we often put fractions, decimals and percentages together as they are really just three ways of talking about the same thing.

Watch today’s video and then attempt the questions below:

Doh! I did it again. I talked about comparative fractions – I meant equivalent fractions!

English

I hope you are enjoying the poem of The Highwayman.

Today we are going to look in a bit more detail at the poetic structure of the poem and you are going to have a go at writing your own poem using the rhyming scheme.

So, have a go at your poem in which you can describe The Highwayman’s planned robbery or what Tim did next or how Bess is waiting – if you try one and it doesn’t work, you can always swap your idea. Remember that you will not do this perfectly first time and in poetry, probably even more than in narrative writing, you need to edit, edit, edit!

Please share your poem on ClassDojo.

Reading

During the week I would like you to read for at least 30 minutes each day. You can get more ideas and suggestions of reading material from the Reading@Home section above.

Oak National Academy have opened their Virtual Library – you can visit that here.

Computing

Something a little different today. To rehearse some of the computing skills, have a go at this game from Barefoot Computing in which you will become a code cracker (which was one of the things that helped Britain win World War 2).

Family Challenge

Time to get you and your family’s brains working after the weekend!

Basically, you need to complete this box with the numbers: 5, 10 and 25.
