Daily News

Good morning. There are 2 live events for you to watch today. Firstly, at 11:30 will be the live broadcast of the Young Imagineers – we have been told there will be a mention for at least one member of the class in the broadcast and I know that another pupil in our class has won a prize! Full details in the ‘Science’ section below.

Today is also Safer Internet Day. At 1:30 this afternoon, there will be a live broadcast, introducing an online safety game ‘The Phisherman’ which you will be able to play.

If you miss either of these while they are broadcasted live, you will be able to watch later on demand.

You will also have another chance to catch one of the live streams from Yorvik Viking centre if you were unable to see those yesterday (I know I was unable to watch the 10am performance as the website was experiencing a lot of traffic – it seemed much better in the afternoon). Two sessions are given over today to this week’s independent learning – remember that these projects will take you up to the end of the week (with an additional timetabled session on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) – spend some time on these – don’t rush through them at a rate of knots and try and get them finished in one day.

Also, we lost a bit of ground yesterday to Year 4, so try and fit in some time to get us back up to top spot:

Viking Week

Check yesterday’s blog entry for the full details, but I would like you to continue with your projects on these two areas.

If you didn’t catch one of the live streamed broadcasts yesterday, there will be two more today at 10am and 2pm today at Jorvikthing.com/schoolsweek along with lots of other pre-recorded video content and information on the website to help you put together your project. You can, of course, add to your research through other links.

You should also be working towards a submission of your biodiversity project this week. All links/details in yesterday’s blog entry:

Reading

I would like you to read for at least 30 minutes each day. You can get more ideas and suggestions of reading material from the Reading@Home section above.

Science

Last month, many of you took part in an online lesson to challenge scientists to invent things to improve the world. People across the world have been voting for your ideas over the last week. I said at the time that there would be some programmes from the Science Museum which may feature your ideas.

The first of those programmes: Sustainability: Is Plastic Fantastic? will be on live today at 11:30. The previous lesson was very interesting, so this should be good.

If you miss the live lesson, you can always catch up afterwards on the same link.

This is the second in a series of 3. Please watch and see if anyone from Curlews gets a mention for one of their ideas. If your invention was to do with health, the third programme (Health: Are we taking care of ourselves?) will be shown on Tuesday 2nd March.

After watching the video, you may be inspired to carry out more research on a particular area, present a poster of something you found out or maybe use the remainder of your learning time today on the independent learning project or to go back over some previous lessons and catch up.
