Writing an Argument

24th September 2018 2 By Mr Simmons

In order to rehearse writing in paragraphs and use number adverbials (such as firstly, secondly and finally) to add cohesion into our writing, the class had to think of reasons why they deserved extra breaktime.

There were certainly many persuasive arguments made, although I wasn’t too sure about the child who wrote:

Secondly, we need a break from all the hard work we do, because sometimes we work harder than the teachers.

I have chosen two pieces of work to share with you.

Firstly, JJ edited his work to realise that an opening sentence introduced what the argument was going to be about.  As well as using the paragraphs and adverbials, he was also able to start with a sentence giving the argument and follow it up with an additional sentence extending the idea.

Next, Iona was able to provide a good range of reasons and her second paragraph shows a growing ability to be able to build upon the argument.

As compelling as the arguments were, I am not sure that I will be able to grant their wish!
