Daily News

Well done – you have got to the end of the first week of home learning. Monday is an INSET day and all the teachers are going to be on an all day Zoom training meeting. As a result, there will be no lessons on Monday, but home learning will resume on Tuesday 12th January (although you can always go back over anything you did not get a chance to do this week). I look forward to seeing you back here then. In the meantime, look after yourselves and have a good weekend.

Mr Simmons’ Joke of the Day

A book just fell on my head. I’ve only got my shelf to blame.

Maths

Our learning of decimals continues today as we work with numbers up to 3 decimal places.

After watching the video you can make a decision – if you want to rehearse the skills of yesterday, then do this Korma activity.

However, if you are quite confident with this now (which many of you are) then you can have a go at these Madras/Vindaloo questions.

Just remember that the numbers MUST be lined up in columns before you do the calculations. I have recorded a video here to go through this for you.

Then have a go at these questions:

The answers for Korma are here:

English

Today, with our newspaper report we go on to plan the recount.

Reading

During the week I would like you to read for at least 30 minutes each day. You can get more ideas and suggestions of reading material from the Reading@Home section above.

DT

Today I am going to give you the instructions to make a game board. You may recall we started to do this in class last term but did not finish them off. Once you have produced the game I will teach you how to play.

You will need to make careful measurements. Don’t rush this – take a bit of time and effort over it and you will be able to continue playing the game time and time again.

To make the game a little more rubust, I suggest using cardboard (such as a cereal box)

You now have all the playing pieces. The aim of the game is as follows:

I will give you 7 co-ordinates. You place the circular counters (from step 3) in these places. These are the blocker counters – you cannot move these.

Then, the challenge is to fit the coloured playing pieces (from step 4) onto the rest of the grid so there are no gaps. Because of the way I generate the co-ordinates of the blocking pieces there will always be a solution.

Try these. Place the blocker counters at the following co-ordinates:

Game 1: E1 F1 D2 B2 A4 E6 E3

Game 2: A5 F1 D2 A2 B5 D5 E2

Game 3: F2 F1 D3 B2 C6 D6 F4

I will post more co-ordinates next week so you can continue to play.

Please upload a picture of your board to ClassDojo!
